What Fabric Type Is Best for Windy Weather?

The best defense against wind is a layering system, not a single fabric: a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm fleece middle layer, and a tightly woven or coated outer shell that blocks wind from passing through. Polyester-cotton fleece blends are the standard middle layer because their brushed pile insulates while the tight knit structure slows wind penetration.

Building a Wind-Resistant Layering System

  • Base layer: lightweight cotton-lycra or moisture-wicking jersey against the skin
  • Mid layer: polar fleece or three-thread fleece (270–320 GSM) for insulation
  • Outer layer: a wind-resistant shell fabric, often bonded or coated, blocks direct wind chill

Fleece alone is not wind-proof — its brushed structure is excellent at trapping warm air but doesn't fully block moving air. Pairing it with a wind-resistant outer layer is what actually cuts wind chill, which is why fleece is almost always specified as a mid-layer fabric rather than an outer shell.
